A start-up developing Multi-Award Winning Personalised Apps.

We save lives by transforming patient informatics.

The Velma Story

The Problem

25,000 die each year from deep vein thrombosis in the UK. 2/3rd of these are preventable with simple measures.

The Solution

Professor Simon Toh, along with Miles Toh (Biomedical Electronic Engineer undergraduate) and Christopher Toh (Electronic and Electrical Engineer (Computer Systems) BSc), founded Velma in 2017 to save as many of these lives as possible by conveying information on DVT in a better to patients, after hospital discharge.

The original concept was to produce high-quality engaging video-animations with nudge methodology, linking these to a reminder leaflet that patients could stick to their fridge, in their homes.

The Company

This multi-award winning concept has led to a proposed start-up B-2-B Social Enterprise, Velma Healthcare, to develop reminder Apps for the NHS and private sector.

Velma Healthcare is supported by the Ingenuity Impact Awards 2021, the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme 2021-22 and the Academic Health Science Network Health Innovation Programme 2023.

Taking our award-winning life-saving concept into an App on patient's smartphones to educate them of symptoms and risks of Deep Vein Thrombosis, and giving bespoke daily reminders on how to prevent this after hospital admission for acute illness (including COVID) and surgery.

IN DEVELOPMENT:

App support aimed at helping children to manage Type 1 diabetes better using gamification and animations

Our Mission

Every year 25,000 people die from Deep Vein Thrombosis in the UK alone. With simple measures, 2/3 of these are preventable.

The VELMA App will show patients how to do this at home, after discharge, and will also provide feedback and compliance data in a secure, seamless, and safe way, between the patient and care team.
